The event
Two filmmakers, two countries, two journeys through life and cinema. Traversée.s brings together Brazilian filmmaker Katia Mesel and Swiss filmmaker Barbara Erni. Through territory, memory, family and creation, their films place two women’s perspectives on the world and the passage of time in dialogue.
The films

Katia Mesel
An immersion in the São João festivities of Santa Cruz do Capibaribe, Pernambuco.

Katia Mesel
Inspired by the work of Brazilian sociologist Gilberto Freyre, the film explores tropical architecture and its role in the social formation of northeastern Brazil.

Katia Mesel
A playful, poetic game between a Super 8 camera and a full moon in 1973.

Katia Mesel
A film inspired by a poem by João Cabral de Melo Neto and his relationship with the Capibaribe River in Recife, northeastern Brazil.

Barbara Erni
The filmmaker frequently visits her mother near the end of her life. Exhausted by the long journeys and overwhelmed by the past, she reflects on her relationship with her mother and on her own life as a woman and artist. Looking through family photographs, she begins to better understand the women of previous generations and how far they have come. Drawing on videos and photographs accumulated during this period, she recounts this search until a final, peaceful encounter.
